June 2010
Since we started Barberyn over 40 years ago, we have welcomed guests from all over the world, and from all walks of life. New guests come in search of wholesome healing, and repeating guest come because they have found a place of healing.

Guests come to celebrate, when life gives them what they desire, and they come to find solace, when life seems harsh and uncertain. We welcome all of you for who you are, rather than what you are. From our guests, we draw inspiration and encouragement, and some times we have a story to share - from the staff, from the guests, and special events that take place.

We know that Twitter and Blogs are fashionable, but we still like to send the occasional post card – through “snail mail”, and we think the web site is as high tech as we wish to go. So we hope the news below is of interest to you and if you have some news to share or photographs, please write to info@barberyn.lk and we will enjoy keeping in touch with you.

The Barberyn Tortoise Family re–unites on Valentine Day

All of you who have visited Barberyn Reef know the story of the three brave tortoises of Barberyn who survived the Tsunami.

The two females and the male are housed in the little garden near the entrance to the reception. Over the last 20 years, the females have laid eggs many times without the success of off springs. Each time the staff waited with anticipation to see the little ones emerge, but they have been disappointed …for nothing happened.

On the last occasion the staff was smart. They realized that they too must play a part in the hatching of the eggs if this historic story was to continue. So, they took the eggs and placed them in a bucket filled with sand and some gravel, and left it near the Sunshine Restaurant, by the ocean, away from prying eyes.

To the amazement and the joy of all of us, three little tortoises emerged after five months!! The baby tortoises had not seen their parents.

The great re -union of the family took place on Valentines Day 14th February 2010 near the reception at 07.30 A M

Greeting the new Year

Barberyn Reef and Barberyn Beach welcomed 2010 according to the traditions of the East and West. Each year in January, both resorts engage in spiritual activity to invoke the blessings of the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha) and the blessings of the Gods that protect us. Monks come to the resorts to chant from the scriptures (pirith) and to receive alms. The images below are from these happy occasions.

Four mothers and four sons

We had the privilege to have with us four mothers who were accompanied by four sons. This is the first time we witnessed such a rare and a joyful coincidence.

These loving sons have set a wonderful example for other sons to follow.
