• Barberyn: whenever I say the word to anyone I get goose bumps, literally. The name alone transports me back to a time, not that long ago, where I made a journey of self-discovery, formed new friendships and had my eyes opened to an entire new world.
  
  I went to Barberyn in March this year (2008) for a three week intensive course in Ayurveda. I had become extremely interested in Ayurveda since my first trips to India and wanted to learn more so I could eventually pass on this knowledge to others. My life path is to help people so for me Ayurveda and I naturally went hand in hand.
  
  Why Barberyn? Well, after extensive research, and I mean really extensive research, Barberyn kept coming back up on all the internet searches I did and it definitely had the best clear and concise website by far. It appealed in the main because the price detailed everything that was included and reflected what I was looking for from this experience. I loved the photos on the website too - they kept drawing me in and I was very keen to experience Sri Lanka for the first time.
  
  My very first impression of Barberyn was at the airport in Colombo when their lovely driver greeted me with a pillow, a bunch of bananas, a bottle of water and a huge grin. From that moment on I knew this was going to be an incredible adventure. It was also my first contact with the staff at Barberyn who made sure that nothing I asked for was too much trouble and everything that could be done to make my stay as happy and as fulfilling as possible was carried out. It is in fact each and every member staff who really, truly deserve to take the merit.
  
  Although I was at Barberyn to enjoy two weeks of luxury treatments I was also there to learn. The course I did was three weeks long and covered the main points of Ayurveda. I loved every minute of the course, mainly because the lecturers were so wonderful, so giving and so patient and my fellow students turned out to be fantastic. The course was enticingly varied and every day was a new learning experience. I personally particularly enjoyed practising the full body massage, or abhyanga, and have since done many, many massages on people back home which they have all thoroughly enjoyed.
  
  I think the highlights of the stay for me were definitely the one-to-one consultations and treatments, the general feeling of total well-being and of 'giving something back to your body and mind' and the utter serenity of Barberyn. I can't express enough how wonderful it was to just 'be' and not have constant noise and pressure around all the time. It is a perfect peaceful haven yet at the same time there are lots of fun things to do and to learn. For example my stay at Barberyn also opened my eyes up to the world of yoga and this again is something I practise at home now with great regularity.
  
  I speak with passion when I say that there really isn't anywhere quite like Barberyn in the world. It is an absolutely unforgettable experience. I have told my friends, family and acquaintances about it and they all say 'wow, I would LOVE to go there'. It left such an imprint on me that I aim to go back in the very near future with my boyfriend to relish again in the treatments and hopefully further my Ayurvedic studies. I cannot wait to show him the people and the place and to once again have that unforgettable experience which is totally and utterly unique to Barberyn.

• Hello Barberyn, I've just re-found you on the web after losing your details from my previous visit in 2003. As you are asking for memories, I thought I would send you mine, in case they are of use for your book.
  
  I ventured to Barberyn Reef with a friend who was more knowledgeable in ayervedic medicine than myself, so I really did not know quite what to expect. My visit was eagerly anticipated: my work was interesting yet very demanding & stressful; I had a close family member suffering from terminal illness; and I had lost touch with my thoughts and direction. My two weeks at Barberyn Reef in early 2003, proved to be the catalyst for a series of decisions I made to re-engage myself to my core values. The beautiful location and tranquility was of course much appreciated, but it was the holistic approach to my treatment which I feel really benefited me. Of all the treatments I received during my stay, the prescribed Shirodhara treatment I believe allowed me to switch off the disturbing 'white noise' in my head, sufficiently to clear my thoughts and make space for positive re-construction of how to live my life. The direct benefits from the treatments I received lasted for months after I left the Reef. However the indirect benefits of a clearer vision allowed me to make very difficult life decisions from which I am now (5 years later) still very much benefiting.

• - My first visit Sri Lanka, 12 years ago, came as a result of my need to improve two conditions that had been hindering my work in Frankfurt, Germany: Stress and Neurodermitis (skin allergies). Searching through the catalogues of various german tour operators specialising in 'health, fitness and wellness holidays' I came accross the Barberyn Reef Hotel and a brief description of Ayurveda. The concept was very interesting and I decided to try it during a two week holiday.
  
  That was the beginning of a long, happy and very successful relationship with the Barberyn Resorts and Ayurveda. During my first stay, apart from their dedicated concern in improving my health, the management of the Barberyn were kind enough to arrange visits to places connected with the passage of my ancestors through their beautiful country ( I am Portuguese ) and made every effort to ensure that I was comfortable with my surroundings and with the treatment.
  
  The success of that first visit resulted in my having become a regular client, visiting Sri Lanka and the Barberyn on a yearly basis, and having been able to encourage many other people from Portugal and friends from other countries to experience the benefits of Ayurveda at the Barberyn Resorts in Beruwala and Welligama. Many of them have also become regular clients, entirely due to the very positive results and improvement to their health, together with the extremely caring attitude of the doctors and all the staff, which reflect the principles instituted by the Rodrigo family.
  
  Apart from having successfully cured me, along the years, from conditions such as stress, neurodermitis, high blood pressure, myomas, arthrosis, cholesterol and lack of balance, they have introduced me to a much healthier way of living, both physical and spiritual.
  
  And their dedication not only to the practice but also to the teaching of ayurvedic principles has certainly contributed to the promotion of these principles in many different countries. The success of their resort courses, in one of which I participated, bears testimony to the quality and care of their teaching methods.
  
  I certainly believe that my health and my life have improved considerably since my first acquaintance with the Barberyn Resorts, and intend to maintain my yearly visits, so long as I am able to! - ""

• In 1995 I found Barberyn Reef listed as a unique place with one of Germany’s top health tour operators, at a time when Ayurveda was little known in Germany. A Sri Lanka Travel Book referred to Barberyn Reef as a niche hotel, specialized in Ayurveda and vegetarian food with a beautiful set of beach bungalows along Beruwela beach.
  
  I contacted Barberyn by phone in 1995 and found a professionally organized hotel, which helped me overcome any form of worry to travel to Asia for the first time in my life. What I found, when I got there was paradise on Earth and I have returned 14 times ever since.
