Ayurveda in Sri Lanka, has won a Silver Award at the Presidential Environmental Awards 2026, the nation\u2019s highest recognition for environmental excellence.<\/p><p>The awards, organised by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), were presented at the BMICH on 19 October 2026 under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. The recognition highlights Barberyn Reef\u2019s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainable tourism and authentic Ayurveda.<\/p><h2>A Pioneer in Ayurveda Wellness<\/h2><p>Barberyn Reef opened in 1968 as a beachside hotel and became a dedicated Ayurveda health resort in 1984, making it the world\u2019s first Ayurveda resort. Today, Barberyn Reef is a certified institution registered as an Ayurveda hospital under the Department of Ayurveda, Sri Lanka. Guests follow doctor-guided wellness programmes centred on healthy eating, yoga, balance and conscious living. Vegetarian meals are prepared largely from locally sourced and organically farmed produce, helping to reduce food miles and the resort\u2019s food carbon footprint. Food waste is converted into biogas, and that renewable energy is used to prepare the herbal decoctions served daily to guests. The resulting bio-fertiliser is combined with compost generated from garden waste, beach cleaning activities and coconut husks. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems supply much of the resort\u2019s daytime electricity demand, while electric vehicles are used for guest transportation.<\/p><p>Barberyn Reef has also invested in a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of approximately 250 kWh, believed to be among the first such investments in Sri Lanka\u2019s tourism sector.
