Demonstrating its long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable wellness tourism, Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort Hospital (Pvt) Ltd., Sri Lanka’s pioneer Ayurveda health resort, celebrated World Environment Day 2026 with a dynamic, full-day programme that inspired action, awareness, and collective responsibility for a greener future.
Bringing together more than 130 employees and management representatives, the event reinforced Barberyn Reef’s vision of “Human development guided by wisdom, rests on the sustainability of life,” highlighting the resort’s belief that human well-being and environmental sustainability are inseparable.
The programme commenced with a Dhamma reflection session, fostering mindfulness and appreciation for the interconnectedness between people and nature. Welcoming participants, Managing Director Mr. Manick Rodrigo emphasized the importance of environmental responsibility in everyday life and business operations.
“We survive only when the environment survives. Environmental responsibility is not a one-day event but a continuous commitment that guides our operations every day“ he stated.
The celebration featured a diverse range of educational, interactive, and experiential activities designed to strengthen environmental awareness and inspire positive action. Participants attended an insightful session on “Healthy Plates, Healthy Planet,” highlighting the link between sustainable food choices, human well-being, and planetary health.
A major attraction of the event was the “Barberyn Eco Experience” Exhibition, which showcased the resort’s sustainability initiatives across departments, including eco-friendly guest amenities, sustainable construction practices, Ayurveda-based wellness products, organic cultivation, resource conservation initiatives, and environmentally responsible operational practices. Employees also participated in a guided Sustainability Tour, gaining firsthand exposure to the resort’s ongoing environmental initiatives and best practices in sustainable hospitality.
Adding further value to the programme, a Senior Environment Officer from the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), Kalutara delivered a special awareness session on environmental protection and the significance of World Environment Day in addressing today’s global environmental challenges.
An engaging session conducted by the resort’s Sustainability Team highlighted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), urgent climate action priorities, and Barberyn Reef’s sustainability journey. Participants were encouraged to adopt simple yet meaningful actions that collectively contribute to environmental protection, while learning about the resort’s future sustainability ambitions, including renewable energy initiatives and its long-term vision towards a net-zero future.
Recognizing that sustainability extends beyond environmental performance, the programme also included a Peace Education Session promoting harmony, mindfulness, and responsible citizenship.
One of the most inspiring moments of the celebration was the Recognition and Appreciation Ceremony for Environmental Contributors, honouring employees who work tirelessly behind the scenes to uphold the resort’s environmental standards and sustainability commitments. Their dedication serves as a reminder that meaningful change is achieved through collective effort and shared responsibility.
As a lasting symbol of environmental stewardship, more than 70 Anoda (Soursop) fruit plants and Nika medicinal plant saplings were distributed among participants, encouraging biodiversity conservation and environmental action beyond the workplace. The event concluded with a staff engagement forum, where employees shared innovative ideas and recommendations to further strengthen the resort’s sustainability performance and environmental impact.
Through initiatives such as these, Barberyn Reef continues to set benchmarks for sustainable wellness tourism in Sri Lanka, demonstrating how businesses can successfully balance environmental responsibility, employee engagement, guest well-being, and long-term sustainability. By combining the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda with innovative sustainability practices, the resort remains committed to creating lasting value for people, communities, and the planet.
