A Celebration of Faith and Culture: The Moragalle Duruthu Maha Perahera

On 28th January 2026, the streets of Moragalle came alive with the Moragalle Duruthu Maha Perahera and Barberyn Reef Resort was honored to be part of this vibrant celebration. As a gesture of gratitude and support for the devoted individuals who bring this sacred procession to life, we provided 1,200 dinner packets along with refreshments (ice cream and water bottles) to the participants, standing alongside the community in a meaningful and practical way. Through this contribution, we were proud to help sustain a cherished tradition that unites culture, faith, and community.

The Duruthu Perahera marks the sacred month of Duruthu (January), commemorating the first visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka. Across the island, these processions are celebrated with dazzling pageantry, including traditional drummers, dancers, elephants/ tuskers adorned in colorful garments and devotees performing rituals of devotion. For Sri Lankans, the Perahera is not only a spectacle of cultural pride but also a profound act of religious reverence, reflecting the deep-rooted Buddhist values of faith, discipline and community.

At Barberyn Reef Resort, supporting the Perahera goes hand in hand with our commitment to sustainable and responsible engagement. By fostering community well-being, supporting local artisans and promoting cultural preservation, we aim to ensure this treasured tradition thrives for generations, while encouraging eco-conscious practices during such events.
